Things To Consider When Hiring A Tow Company To Move Your Vehicle

Salvador Flores

Towing your car or truck is often the result of a breakdown, but finding a towing company to help you does not have to be complicated. There are some things to consider when looking for a towing company, but with the right questions, you can find a company that can help.

Emergency Towing

When your vehicle is not drivable and you need it towed, you may be less concerned with the towing company you use and more concerned about getting the vehicle off the road. The towing company will need to know the nature of the breakdown to send the right kind of tow truck to you, so make sure you let them know what happened and where you are located.

If there is a lot of traffic creating a safety concern, let the towing company know so they can expedite the tow truck's arrival. Once you make the call, stay as far away from the traffic as possible while waiting for the tow truck to arrive. If there is a large shoulder along the side of the road, it is a good idea to wait for the tow company on the shoulder.

Non-Emergency Towing

There are times when you need to have a vehicle towed to the repair shop but it is not an emergency, so you can schedule a time for the towing company to pick it up. A car broken down at home in the driveway is inconvenient, but it is not causing a hazard, so the priority is much lower than if you were on the side of a major highway.

You can consider several towing companies in this situation and find one that can accommodate your schedule and budget. You may also want to ask for a specific type of tow truck to move the vehicle, and when you have time to shop around, it is easier to find one that has what you need. Most towing companies offer rollback trucks and standard tow trucks, so talk to them about your situation and what you feel would be the best option when moving your vehicle.

Specialty Towing

If you are moving a classic car or a valuable vehicle to the shop for some work, you may want to find a towing company that can offer specialty towing for you. These companies will handle the vehicle with extreme care. That often means covering the car and towing it on a flatbed or even inside a closed trailer for you. This kind of towing is a little more expensive, but if you are moving a car that is highly collectible or valuable, the extra cost for the extra care is often worth it.
